World Music Café will launch a new documentary globally at 3pm AWST on Tuesday 1 November 2022.
The 30-minute film celebrates creativity and community harmony with music, food, and stories through the lens of the World Music Café events.
World Music Café is a multi-year recipient of the Australian Cultural Diplomacy Grant Program, supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and is currently producing a series of four documentaries over 2022 and 2023.
The first program features southern African and Indian Ocean musicians based in Perth including Grace Barbe, Mahamudo Selimane, and Alastair van Schoor, plus the Cape Town marimba band Thongalethu, and behind the scenes interviews with the World Music Café kitchen team and events crew.
The World Music Café documentary is produced and co-directed by Multicultural Futures’ World Music Café Facilitator Jon Cope, co-directed, filmed and edited by Genevieve Cooper of Joy of Colour Media, with production consultancy by Graeme Sward.
World Music Café Facilitator, Jon Cope, said “It’s fantastic that our social enterprise, collaboratively created with new Australians only three years ago, is now able to share contemporary Australian culture with a wider international audience.”
The World Music Café social enterprise was created by Multicultural Futures in 2019, with community partner United in Diversity, and provides training, employment, and community connection for the enterprise team of new migrant and refugee backgrounds. It has been described by the UWA Centre for Social Enterprise evaluation report as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country’.
On Friday 4 November, World Music Café will present it’s final ‘Dinner & Show’ event for 2022 featuring Brazilian group Perth Choro and the Indian sarod master Praashekh Borkar ensemble, plus a banquet of international cuisine prepared by chef Nimrod Kazoom and the WMC kitchen team.
